George Fishlock to retire after 19 years on the AvSuper Board

George Fishlock has announced his decision to retire from the AvSuper Board and his role as Chairman of the AvSuper Fund at the end of January 2019, following nearly 20 years of service to our members.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to have worked with the Board members and staff during my time on the Board, and I must thank both them and the members for that opportunity given to me. It will indeed be a sad day for me to leave the AvSuper family, but in doing so I have every confidence that its future is assured, and that it is operating to the highest standards and efficiency of any Fund in the country,” Mr. Fishlock said.

After 30 years as an air traffic controller, qualified accountant George has been an enormous benefit for AvSuper.  He was the Chairman of the Investment Committee for some years, and has been Chair of the Trustee Board since 2013.

Michelle Wade, AvSuper’s CEO, said, “George has been a consistent champion of members’ interests during his tenure, as well as a great support and mentor to myself and the management team.  He will be greatly missed by all here at AvSuper and we wish him well for the future!”

AvSuper supports the fight against breast cancer

One in eight people get diagnosed with breast cancer every day.  That one in eight is my Mum. It could be yours.

On 13 May 2018, it will be the 21st running of the Women in Super Australian Mother’s Day Classic and I’m proud to say that AvSuper are sponsoring this worthy event for the 11th year.

The aim of the Mother’s Day Classic is to deliver a fun, healthy and inspirational event that brings the community together on Mother’s Day to support and remember those touched by breast cancer.

We would love to see you support this event in your capital city by walking, running, registering to volunteer or making a donation.  This is the largest single fundraising event which supports further research into breast cancer through the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) – over $33 million has been raised in the last 20 years.

In Canberra, the event is being organised by a great team which includes two AvSuper staff (Naomi Hales and myself), and will be supported on the day by many volunteers such as our Operations Manager, Shan Badowski. If you’re in Canberra, come and say hello, and maybe you can walk alongside Nick Smith, Executive Manager – Finance & Tax.

Together, let’s walk all over breast cancer!

Registrations are now open at http://www.mothersdayclassic.com.au/register/ – don’t forget to add yourself to the AvSuper team!

Donations can also be made online at https://mothersdayclassic18.everydayhero.com/au/avsuper.

Investment team changes

It is with great pleasure that I announce Kong Lau has joined our investments team!

Kong Lau, AvSuper Investments Officer

Kong Lau, AvSuper Investments Officer

Since earlier this month, Kong has been working with Sue Field (Investments Manager) as part of our investments team to ensure we maximise your money for your retirement. Kong’s role will include managing our Custodian, manager valuations, FX performance and administration of our investments.

Kong is a fully qualified financial planner and holds a Bachelor of Commerce. He is already known (under his English name, Wilson) to many of our members  from his previous role within our Member Services team. Kong’s investment experience/knowledge will ensure our investments processes and decisions are managed accurately and with attention to detail. Kong wants to help our members in a new way and is excited by this change, and he is looking forward to helping grow members’ retirement savings.

I am sure you will join with Sue and I in welcoming Kong to his new role.

Our member services team is expanding!

It is with great pleasure that I welcome two new staff to our Member Services team from 9 April!

Nathan McCabe, Senior Member Advice Consultant for AvSuper in Queensland

Nathan McCabe, Senior Member Advice Consultant

Nathan McCabe will be our new Senior Member Advice Consultant based in Brisbane (yes, that means we are opening a new office!) to assist members with general enquiries and to provide personalised advice.

Nathan is passionate about helping people work towards and enjoy the retirement they deserve. He has considerable experience within the financial services industry including a Senior Financial Planning role with a Major Bank and a Client Service Manager role with an Industry Superannuation Fund. Nathan also enjoys flying and very much enjoyed his 15 hour flight on a Qantas A380 in 2016! Nathan looks forward to meeting and assisting our members.

Meanwhile, Shawn Jones will be starting in our Canberra office as a Member Advice Consultant, replacing Ross Connors (as he moved overseas with his family). Shawn has had more than 12 years experience in super and finance, and is also looking forward to assisting you with your super.
